The Ahari Hakadosh Synagogue
A Place with a Mission

Since its founding in 2001, Izu’s Place has become the heart of Jewish life in Jacó, Costa Rica. What began as a warm home for Shabbat and holiday meals evolved into a full kosher hospitality complex—offering everything a Jewish traveler might need:

  • A kosher restaurant
  • Orthodox synagogue
  • Shabbat and holiday services
  • Kosher accommodations
  • And most importantly—a sense of belonging
Jewish Center & Traveler Support

In 2010, the Ahari Hakadosh Synagogue officially opened its doors, becoming the first synagogue in Jacó Beach and the only one within a 100 km radius.

In 2018, we established the Jewish Center, located within the Izu’s Place complex. The center serves as a welcoming hub for all Jewish travelers—offering guidance, information, spiritual support, and assistance for any need that may arise during their time in Costa Rica.

The Meaning Behind the Name
The name of our synagogue, Ahari Hakadosh, was chosen to honor the memory of one of the greatest Kabbalists in Jewish history – Rabbi Yitzhak Luria Ashkenazi, known as The Holy Ari (HaAri Hakadosh). He lived in the 16th century in Tzfat, and his spiritual teachings transformed the world of Jewish mysticism and inner Torah. Interestingly, when the synagogue was named, we did not realize that our founder, Yizhak Eskenazi, shares both the first and last name with the Ari Hakadosh—Yitzhak Ashkenazi. Only later did we make the connection, seeing it as a sign of Divine Providence—a reflection of the soul-mission and spiritual foundation upon which this synagogue was built. Here at Ahari Hakadosh, we strive to carry the light and teachings of the Ari: unity, inner transformation, and deep connection to God.
Supporting Ahari Hakadosh

The Ahari Hakadosh Synagogue is lovingly funded and maintained by Yizhak and Toni Ashkenazi, as part of their lifelong mission to provide a spiritual home for Jewish travelers in Costa Rica.
The synagogue operates independently and is not dependent on public donations.

However, if you feel inspired to support our work—whether through helping us purchase new holy books, contribute to renovations, or enhance the beauty and sanctity of the synagogue—you are warmly invited to donate.

Every contribution, large or small, is deeply appreciated and helps us elevate this sacred space for all who enter.

To make a donation, please contact us directly or speak with one of our team members during your visit.

Shalom and Welcome to Our Community!

We are excited to connect with guests planning to visit Jacó and who are interested in joining a minyan at our synagogue. Baruch Hashem, we regularly have a minyan for Shabbat, especially during the high season.

We are launching a minyan sign-up diary on our website to better organize and ensure we have a minyan. This will allow visitors to register their attendance in advance, helping us coordinate and maintain this beautiful tradition.

Stay tuned for the launch, and feel free to reach out if you have questions or need assistance planning your visit. We look forward to welcoming you to Jacó and sharing the joy of Shabbat.

Warm regards,
Jaco Jewish community
